Since last year, Korean leader Kim Jong Un has carried out many diplomatic efforts so that Korean sanctions are lifted and he can develop the economy. Under this young leader, North Korea witnessed the rise of the private market and consumerism, but the country still faces tight political and economic controls.

After the second summit between Mr. Kim and US President Donald Trump ended at the end of February without any agreement, North Korea became increasingly uncomfortable with the deadlock.

In a commentary published on the first page of the May 20 issue, the Korean ruling party newspaper said sanctions were designed to push North Korea into the extreme economic landscape. The article also calls on Koreans not to depend on lifting sanctions.
