Accidentally discovered a 1000 year old tomb on the floor

A couple who was sho‌cked when renovating their old house near Bodø county Nordland in northern Norway, accidentally discovered an ancient tomb on the floor.

After removing the floorboards, the couple discovered some rocks. They continued digging and spotted something glittering in the light. At first, both thought it was a wheel from a toy car because the floor had not been lifted since construction in 1914.

After further digging, they discovered that the sparkle was actually a glass bead. In addition, a large iron ax and several other iron objects were found on the floor.

According to experts, the tomb may date from the 9th century in the Viking era

The couple immediately contacted the agency responsible for Nordland County’s cultural heritage. Experts from the Tromsø museum came to inspect the house the next day.

According to Norwegian law, any cultural relics showing traces of people from before 1537 are preserved.

When experts came to excavate the area below the floor, they discovered it was an ancient tomb about 1,000 years old from the Viking era. For the first time, a Viking tomb was found on the floor in Norway.

Iron axes were found in the tomb

"We believe that the tomb can exist from the 9th century. Iron and glass bead items could appear in the late Viking period when Norway began to become a Christian and became a kingdom," he said. , archaeologist Martinus Hauglid said.

The artifacts are now being transferred to Tromsø University for further study. It is known that this is the latest in a series of fascinating archaeological discoveries related to this Nordic country.
