According to an Indian police source, the accident occurred at 4:30 am local time. The two-story bus moving on the Yamuna Expressway connecting New Delhi to Agra, suddenly crashed into a median between two overhead lanes and then fell into the river 12 meters from the road. Police suspect the driver drove to sleep while driving.

The authorities found 29 victims’ bodies at the scene, while about 18 people were taken to emergency hospitals. Currently Indian authorities are implementing rescue work in the field.

About 50 people are believed to be on the bus when the accident occurred. Thus, at least 3 victims are still unknown. However, the search and rescue had many difficulties due to the flood of river water.

According to Indian officials, with a length of 165km, the Yamuna Expressway has 6 lanes linking the capital of New Delhi with the city of Agra as the country’s longest highway. Since the road opened in 2012, traffic accidents on this road have claimed 900 lives.

On average, each year in India more than 150,000 people are killed in traffic accidents, mainly due to poor infrastructure and chauffeur drivers.
