Archaeologists have uncovered a new mystery regarding the skulls of women and children centuries after they were buried under a Mexican city.

Polite experts were puzzled by this finding, unable to trace the origins of the hundreds of skulls of lost souls from the 15th century.

The remains of 119 people were found in an ancient Aztec skull tower located in the ancient Aztec capital Tenochtitlan - home to today’s Mexico City.

But what surprises the experts is that many of the skulls are believed to be of women and children. The Skull Tower was part of Huei Tzompantli - a gigantic structure made of skulls that gave fear to Spain’s conquerors.

Experts uncovered the structure in 2017, with the latest discovery made while experts partially excavated the east.

Archaeologist Barrera Rodriguez said: "Although we cannot determine how many of these people are warriors, perhaps some are prisoners reserved for sacrifices."

The Mexican authorities rated the creepy discovery "one of the most important archaeological discoveries of the country in many years".

While Culture Minister Alejandra Frausto said in a statement: "At every step, Mayor Templo continues to surprise us. Without a doubt, Huei Tzompantli is one of the most impressive archaeological findings. most in our country in recent years ".

Rodrigo Bolanos, an anthropologist, noticed the fact that the skulls of women and children were among the findings.

He was quoted by the Daily Mail saying: "We were expecting only men, obviously young people, like warriors, but finding traces of women and children is something we don’t imagine. We don’t have any documents and this is actually the first time in Huey Tzompantli.

Experts suspect these skulls were those of those sacrificed to the Aztec Go‌ds.
