According to German congressman Waldemar Herdt, the US’s plan to form an alliance to stop Nord Stream 2 is a testament to a split within the European Union.

Waldemar Herdt, a member of the AfD party and the German House Foreign Affairs Committee, believes there will be no coalition against Nord Stream 2 without consensus among European countries on this issue.

“The scenario that US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo mentioned is predictable. However, an alliance is formed only when there are differences between European countries. Initially, we expected that the countries of the European Union would have the same say on this issue, ”Herdt told Sputnik.

The German congressman argues that Washington’s pressure on countries that don’t take the US position will increase.

In an interview with the German newspaper Bild published on 21/9, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo revealed the establishment of a coalition to stop the completion of construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. US diplomacy said that this gas pipeline "poses a risk for Europe by making it dependent on Russian gas".

He added that Nord Stream 2 also threatens Ukraine, "something many Germans deeply care about".

“We hope that the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline will not be completed, we are working to build an alliance to stop this project. We hope that the German government will see it this way, whether it is because of what happened to Mr. Navalny or because of the real security impacts resulting from Russia’s dependence on gas. Mr. Pompeo said.

The United States, which is promoting the sale of its liquefied gas in Europe, actively opposes the project, as is Ukraine and some European countries. The country imposed sanctions on the project in 2019, requiring companies in charge of piping to stop their work.

The Swiss company Allseas therefore almost immediately recalled its pipe-laying vessels.
