The massacre occurred in the small village of Karida, in the plateau area of Hela province. This village of about 800 people was surrounded by violence and massacre.

According to Guardian , this is one of the most brutal tribal violence in the country for years.

The murder occurred in the early morning of July 8 during a raid on Karida village.

Philip Pimua, Karida’s medical center official, was in the village at the time of the attack. He said that among the victims there were 8 children aged 1-15 years and 2 pregnant women.

While New Zealand radio station RNZ led sources from police spokesman Tari Thomas Levongo said there were 15 victims, including 10 women and 5 children. Thomas is a field inspector in the village of Karida.

According to Mr. Pimua, the massacre occurred at around 6:00 am July 7. Those killed were opened to the attackers.

"I woke up in the morning, went on fire in the kitchen. At the same time, I heard gunshots. After that, I saw a few houses burning. So I knew that the enemy had entered the village." Mr. Pimua recalled.

"I fled and hid behind the bush. At about 9-10, I came back and found bodies cut to pieces and houses burned."

Guns and knives are used in the attack.

Mr. Pimua knew all the victims. However, he said that many bodies were destroyed by knife stains that it was difficult to identify.

Pimua said he and the villagers had wrapped their bodies in mosquito nets, then fled the village. They feared that the attackers were still hiding in the bushes and could attack again. He hopes to return to the village to bury the bodies on July 10.

Hela Province and other areas in the highlands of Papua New Guinea have been beset by vio‌lent massacres in recent years.

New Prime Minister Papua New Guinea blamed the lack of police resources in the area that led to attacks.

"How to ensure security for a province with 400,000 people while only 60 police?", He said.
