The second strain has been confirmed as a mutation of the original coronavirus.
The CEO of deCODE biopharmaceutical company Kári Stefánsson has confirmed the world’s first unusual infection. Studies suggest that the second mutant strain may be more infectious than the corona virus originally discovered in Wuhan.
This is one of the astonishing new discoveries deCODE has discovered from an analysis of the genetic sequence of 40 Covid-19 strains found in Iceland.
According to Kári, the diversity of genetic sequences found in Covid-19 samples taken in Iceland suggests that the virus was brought to Iceland from a wider range than previously thought.
The main source of spread in Iceland is now thought to be from Italy, Austria and England. A football match in the US is said to be the source of 7 cases in Iceland.
Kári also estimates that 1% of Icelanders are currently infected. Previous test results showed that only 0.5% were infected, but Kári believes the true number of infections could be higher because many people may not have symptoms and currently have not tested it. .
So far, more than 10,000 tests have been performed, providing Iceland scientists with invaluable data and allowing the country to become the world’s leading country in the study of the genetic structure of viruses.
