A Bolivian policeman was shot in the chest by protesters during a coup that ousted President Evo Morales but was unharmed.

According to the Daily Star, the police officer said he was lucky to survive by taking a Bible with him to his chest. Images posted on the internet show a policeman holding a Bible with a bullet hole in his hand.

The incident occurred during a riot in Santa Cruz, eastern Bolivia. Bolivian police try to restore order in the town of Yapacani, according to Oscar Gutierrez, who heads the task force in Santa Cruz.

"A young police officer miraculously survived," Oscar said. “The police officer was shot with a 9mm gun. It is most likely a police gun, stolen by troublemakers. ”

"The policeman left the Bible at left and the book blocked the bullet," Oscar added. A Christian policeman confirmed to the Bolivian media: "Yes, that is a miracle."

Bolivian police are currently suppressing protesters believed to support the deposed president, Evo Morales. The policeman hit by a bullet in the chest was taken to the hospital for a general checkup and will soon return to work.

An estimated 30 people were arrested during the riots. Mr. Evo Morales has announced his resignation, fled to Mexico asylum, but has left the possibility "one day will return".
