Halfeti is a small town in Turkey, in Shangle Urfa province, on the banks of the Euphrates river, 120 km from Shangle Urfa. This is the only place in the world to grow a rare black rose, because only the special soil and pH of the Euphrates own groundwater are eligible for this type of rose.

The majority of Halfeti was submerged by the Birecik Dam flooding the area in the 1990s. Thus, Halfeti is divided into two new and old places. The remnants of the old Halfeti are sinking into the river, attracting many visitors to explore, especially underwater museums.

Due to the construction of the dam near Halffitti, people were forced to move to new towns 10 km away, causing the cultivation of black roses to be affected and thus reducing yields. With recent changes in the growing environment, black roses are also hard to grow as before.

In order to avoid extinction, the local government collected seeds from people and replanted them in greenhouses with conditions similar to the old Halfeti town flooded with water. Everyone hopes this will contribute to local tourism.

Referring to Halfeti, people often think of the mysterious black roses. This flower originally appears in dark red in spring but gradually turns black when summer comes.

The shape of the black rose is similar to the normal rose, but it is the different color that makes it unique. The Turks love it and hate it because it symbolizes death and bad news. Although black roses are rare, if you buy them for a girlfriend, it means that you want to curse her.
