The strange village ‘is hidden’, appearing only once a year
The village of Curdi was sunk by the dam for 11 months of the year, appearing only once a year

It is the village of Curdi, a village located in the state of Goa in western India. Curdi sits on two hills west of the Ghats with the river Salaulim - a tributary of one of the great rivers in Goa that runs through the village.

It used to be a rich village. However, everything ended in 1986 when the first dam was built that submerged the entire village. Periodically, every May, every year, when the water recedes, what is left of an old village of Curdi appears again. On the day of the sprint, the original inhabitants of the village will gather to celebrate.

After the sprint, the old background of the old village appeared

This rich village used to be a place of fertile land, with a population of nearly 3,000 people. They live on rice cultivation, coconut, cashew, mango and jackfruit cultivation. The old village also has a main temple with a smaller temple, a chapel and a mosque.

Since Goa was liberated from Portugal in 1961, things have changed. First, the state chief, Dayanand Bandodkar, visited the village and said he would build the first dam in Goa state. He also stressed how important the dam would be to people in southern Goa.

"The state governor said, the dam will submerge the village, but our sacrifice will be for greater benefit," recalled Gajanan Kurdikar, 75, a native of the village.

On the day the old village appeared, the original residents would gather, organize religious rites and celebrate

Later, more than 600 households including the Kurdika family moved to nearby villages. They were granted land for housing, received compensation.

"When we arrived at the new village, we had absolutely nothing," recalled Inacio Coleues, a resident. Inacio was one of the first few families to resettle in 1982. They had to live in temporary houses, until they built their own houses. It took more than five years, some people in Curdi to give up permanently their once-buried places.

Meanwhile, Mr. Kurdikar and his family left Curdi village when he was 10 years old. “From my memory, my family was one of the last to leave the village. It was a very big rainy day from the night before. Water from the field started flowing into the house, so we had to go now. ”

As planned, the first dam in Goa state appeared, supplying water to all the people in the south. It is a Salaulim irrigation project, built on the banks of Salaulim, providing drinking, irrigation and industrial water to most people in the region.

Every May, every year, when the water recedes, the old village pops up with the remains of many old houses, including the old ones that were left behind. It was also the time when the original inhabitants of Curdi returned to their homeland, reviewing old memories together, and performing religious rituals and partying.
