Figures from the Swift global payment system show that Southeast Asian banks are the main target of cybercrime.

Hackers used these banks to receive up to 83% of the "robbery" amounts in fraudulent transactions during the two years 2018-2019.

Swift’s report shows that the remaining 17% is through European, North American and Middle Eastern banks. Hackers use beneficiary accounts - often called "mule accounts" - to transfer stolen money.

Southeast Asian financial institutions are considered the main targets of technology crimes in the past 15 months, in addition to institutions in Africa, Central Asia and Latin America. The prey is always the bank with a small amount of cross-border transactions every day because it will be less detected.

The attacks occur during the "lying" area, ie they cannot penetrate the bank’s payment system despite penetrating the customer’s computer. The attacker will wait for weeks, even months. After having mastered the behavior and other rules of the customers, they began a general offensive.

In general, Swift’s report said the attacks were reduced in scale when fraudulent transactions were only between 250,000 and 2 million USD. Earlier this number was 10 million USD.

Transactions in the dollar account for 70% of the attacks since 2016. The attacks on transactions in European currencies such as the euro and the pound are on the rise. About 5% is aimed at transactions in Australian dollars, Hong Kong dollars and the yuan.
