Shimabara, located near Nagasaki, in the southwest of the country, attracts tourists by the sewers full of Koi fish. Different from the common sewer system in Vietnam, the sewage in Shimabara is clear with colorful Koi fish swimming around. Despite the "No Fish to Eat" sign, many visitors still enjoy stopping to drop some fish bread crumbs.

Shimabara is also known as the City of Koi Fish. There are dozens of hot springs around the city. However, Koi fish have only appeared here since 1978.

So far, the whole town has hundreds of fish swimming in the gutters, each adult can reach up to 70cm long.

In addition to Koi fish, this Shimabara town also has beautiful gardens, 17th-century castles, traditional minka houses, and residence for Samurai warriors.

At the foot of Unzen’s footing, overlooking the Ariake Sea, the small town has a vio‌lent history: a devastating earthquake and tsunami that took place in the 18th century killed 15,000 inhabitants of the town.
